Just a great big Nope

A quick rant about

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I think I owe the writer of that Romantasy article an apology. I mean, I still think she doesn’t know the differences between fantasy and romance, or what the tropes and conventions of either are. And, she definitely thinks both are beneath her.

BUT she was right about one thing, Maas’ Throne of Glass is dreadful.

The writing is clunky and immature (yes I know the author was 16, but I’m not). The love triangle (because of course there has to be a love triangle) is incredibly forced and gets far more page time than the actual plot does.
And the protagonist is remarkably unlikable. I mean hats off to a young author for trying to give the character depth, but my god she makes no sense. On the one hand we are told (by the protagonist, mostly) that she is some kind of ultra assassin. But she is the most shallow, spoilt brat I have ever seen committed to paper. Far more interested in pretty clothes and what other women think of her.

It’s a story where actions are driven by plot convenience rather than character and the plot itself drags along while the protagonist plays dress-up and flirts with the two men. Nobody thinks about the plot until it happens.

I noped out before the first third, with a big sigh of relief.
