LoveBirds in Gauteng

My latest feature article just hit the shelves!

Lovebirds are a rare sighting in South Africa and do not occur in Gauteng naturally today. However bird fossils paint a very different picture of lovebird and parrot distribution in the past.

This article, which was inspired by the recent discovery of a new lovebird species in the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng, explores what we know of the evolutionary history of parrots and lovebirds. Looking at genetic evidence, which traces their origins, through the (very patchy) fossil record of the continent, all the way to South Africa. Lovebirds, it turns out, might have been a lot more common a sighting to human ancestors than they are today.
